Terrax Pattern Termites for the perfidious Iron Warriors
Reinforcements for the IVth Legion
What better way for treacherous dogs like the Iron Warriors to traverse the battlefield than beneath the enemy, arriving unannounced and unexpected? The Terrax Pattern Termites, therefore are perfect for the duplicitous followers of the false Warmaster.
These are all about the weathering, of course, and for the tracks I used a combination of Agrellan Earth and Stirland Battlemire, pressed into the tracks and drill and washed with Agrax Earthshade.
The Iron Warriors' paint scheme is considered an easy one, and maybe it is if you have an airbrush, but the trick is make the iron armour look weathered, rusty and battle-worn. For this I spray the armour Leadbelcher, and then wash with a 1:1 mix of Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil. Then I drybrush with Ironbreaker. Another lighter wash of Agrax Earthsade and Nuln Oil never hurts, and then I sponge on a mix of Abaddon black and Leadbelcher, then some Rhinox hide and finally some Doombull brown. Dabbing with a drybrush works almost as well, especially in those places that are hard to reach with a sponge.
It's at this point I paint rust streaks, which usually involve 2 or 3 coats to build up the effect. A light drybrush with the mix you are using for the rust blends things in well. Don't worry avout overdoing it at this stage, because then we drybrush with our mix of Abaddon Black and Leadbelcher to blend everything back in. And finally another wash of Agrax earthshade.
I did have a nightmare where the masking tape pulled coat off paint off the model on one flank, right down to the resin. It is hard to match up the weathering I have just described on a patch, but a mix of Rhinox Brown and Leadbelcher is not a bad place to start, to get that rusty brow metal effect going right from the start.
