Spear of Konor Campaign: Warsmith Varyk Morghalis leads by example

The Spear of Konor campaign resumes planetside.

In the Spear of Konor campaign, the Ultramarines' XXth Chapter continue to divert any Iron Warriors' reinforcements for their boarding action by attacking their main lunar base.

The first casualty, killed by one single lucky shot

The battle started with the Iron Warriors seizing the initiative, their Tyrant Siege terminators moving into a ruin to take up an advantageous position to get the most out of their cyclone missile launchers. They quickly made their presence felt, wrecking one of the Ultramarines' Rhino transports, and subsequently exacting a heavy toll on the tactical marines forced to escape the burning wreckage. However, the first significant casualty was the Iron Warriors' Contemptor Dreadnought, Aurox the Relentless, exploding after a lucky shot from an Ultramarines' tactical sergeant's combi melta gun. The XIIIth Legion followed up with a charge on the Iron Warriors' Cataphractii terminator squad, from both their Contemptor Dreadnought, Agrippus the Interred, and their Cataphractii squad. The already wounded Contemptor was killed in the assault, but the IVth Legion's Cataphractii were heavily outnumbered and were quickly finished off.

The battle now looked to be turning the Ultramarines' way, even though their Deredeo Dreadnought was unable to silence any of the Tyrant Siege Terminators. Their Invictarus Suzerain squad charged the Iron Warriors' Domitar Ferrum Battle Automaton and hacked it to pieces with their Legatine axes before he could even swing his graviton maul. But where the automaton failed, the IVth Legion's tactical squad succeeded, felling half the Suzerain Invictarii at point blank range. Meanwhile, the Tyrant Siege Terminators launched another salvo of krak missiles at the XIIIth Legion's Deredeo Dreadnought, finishing him off once and for all.

Had the Ultramarines' Deredeo been able to thin the Tyrant Siege Tyrants' numbers, the battle might have finished differently

With the battle turning the Iron Warriors' way, their Warsmith, Varyk Morghalis, threw himself at the Ultramarines' remaining dreadnought. The dreadnought's overwatch fire streaked harmlessly past the Praetor and the two locked in combat. The Dreadnought was the first to strike, landing one telling blow on the IVth Legion's warlord. For a second it looked as if that one blow would be enough to kill the Warsmith, but his Cataphractii armour held up and he responded by raining a flurry of brutal blows with his thunder hammer on the dreadnought, finally finishing him. The Ultramarines knew they had lost their last chance of claiming victory and fell back to regroup another time.
